Overweight/Overdimensional Permit
Determine if a Permit is Required
- A permit issued to a carrier to allow operation of a vehicle or load that exceeds the statutory limits.
- Permitted loads must be non-divisible.
- Permits are issued by the City of Sergeant Bluff for roads within City limits. Separate permits must be obtained from Iowa DOT for state and highways only or county jurisdictions for travel on other roadways.
Definition of an Indivisible Load
Any load or vehicle exceeding applicable length, height, width or weight limits that if separated into smaller loads or vehicles, would:
- Compromise the intended use of the vehicle.
- Destroy the value of the load or vehicle.
- Require more than eight work hours to dismantle using appropriate equipment.
Legal Dimensions
A permit is typically required if vehicle dimensions exceed:
- Width: 8 feet 6 inches
- Height: 13 feet 6 inches
- Length: 41-foot single vehicle
- 53-foot trailer, loaded or empty
- 57-foot lowboy trailers used exclusively for the transportation of construction equipment
Weight
A permit is typically required if vehicle gross weight exceeds 80,000 pounds.
Annual Overweight/Overdimensional Permit
An annual overweight permit is for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight in excess of eighty thousand (80,000) pounds but less than one hundred fifty-six thousand (156,000) pounds and/or in excess of the size limits as provided in Iowa Code Chapter 321, "Size, Weight and Load" up to a maximum of one hundred twenty feet (120') in length or thirteen feet five inches (13'5") in width or fifteen feet five inches (15'5") in height shall pay an annual permit fee of fifteen ($15.00) dollars which will authorize operation on approved routes within the City of Sergeant Bluff for a period of one year from the date issued. **IMPORTANT** Applications for permits shall be made more than twenty-four (24) hours in advance of when the permit will be used. Approval of a permit when requested less than twenty-four (24) hours in advance shall be subject to availability of staff for review and shall require payment of double the permit fee amount provided for herein.
Excessive Overweight Permit
An excessive overweight permit is for vehicles with weight of two hundred (200,000) pounds or more shall pay a single daily use permit fee of seventy ($35.00) dollars which will authorize operation on approved routes within the City of Sergeant Bluff for a specified period of twenty-four (24) hours. One-Time Overweight Permit
A one-time overweight permit is for vehicles with weight excess of one hundred fifty-six thousand (156,000) pounds but less than two hundred thousand (200,000) pounds shall pay a single dailyuse permit fee of thirty-five ($70.00) dollars which will authorize operation on approved routes within the City of Sergeant Bluff for a specified period of twenty-four (24) hours.
