School Resource Officer
The partnership between the City of Sergeant Bluff and Sergeant Bluff-Luton Community School District has developed a School Resource Officer (SRO) program and has been a positive addition to the department and the community.
The primary function of the SRO is to serve as an intervention and prevention officer for all Sergeant Bluff-Luton Community School District students. The SRO is available for parents and school staff who have concerns regarding students. An office is maintained by the SRO at the Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School allowing open access for students with law enforcement needs. The SRO also receives administrative referrals from school administrators and, depending on the offense, takes the appropriate action.
The SRO is involved with various meetings, special projects, presentations, training, and special enforcement efforts throughout the year pertaining to his/her duties. The SRO is also actively involved with school programs and attends functions where he meets with students and parents.
There is a nine week program with the 5th graders that the SRO Officer has in their classrooms teaching D.A.R.E. In the nine weeks they discuss issues from Alcohol and Tobacco as well as Safe and Responsible Choices, Resistance Strategies, Peer Pressure, Stress, Confident Communication, Communicating Effectively, and Bullying.
The D.A.R.E. class does a community project where they pick up trash in the community. After they are finished in return they receive a Pizza Party on that day. Also, the D.A.R.E. class goes to Ponca State Park for their D.A.R.E. graduation party. During this visit they get to participate in several activities such as fishing, kayaking, shooting bow and arrows, shooting BB guns, sling shots, and some prehistoric weapons.
